Dear Premier Williams,
On May 14, 2009 I attended the signing of the:
Proclamation
TO RECOGNIZE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WAR BRIDES
BY
THE GOVERNMENT OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
The Deputy Speaker, House of Assembly, Tom Osborne, M.H.A, organized this event. This was a worthwhile and much appreciated event.
As a daughter of a war bride and a person who has spent over 3000 hrs over the past three years working on keeping the memory and achievements of these women alive. I believe it would be a generous gesture of the government if it were to have its members throughout Newfoundland & Labrador present copies of the proclamation at a tea for the war brides and their families in various central areas such as Central, Corner Brook, Port Aux Basque, Stephenville and the Northern Peninsula, etc. Making the events closer to where the war brides live.
One only had to attend the ceremony in St. John’s to realize there were no war brides from outside the Avalon area.
Due to advanced age and dependency of help from others, many war brides were unable to make the trip. Some were even unaware that the event was taking place. It would be a sad error if arrangements were not made to include these other war brides, their families and the families of deceased war brides.
